Going Contactless: Where to Begin

Below is a list of questions you can use to start assessing your contactless smart card needs.

1. For what the card will be used? For identification, access control, transactional purposes? For multiple applications?

2. Where will the readers/writers be located? Indoor, Outdoor or both? If outdoor, to what kind of climate conditions will the readers/writers be exposed?

3. What kind of readers/writers will be needed for the cards? Standalone mobile readers? Readers that can be integrated into another device (such as a gate or vending machine)?

4. What level of card and data security will you require? Do you need cards that cannot easily be damaged, forged or altered? Will the card be used for high security application?

5. How many contactless smart cards you intend to issue and what are your ongoing needs?

6. Will you use centralized or decentralized card production and personalization process; i.e. will you issue cards from one central site, or several sites?

7. If decentralized, how many cards per day per station?

8. What kind of electrical requirements do you have available?

9. What budget do you have available for cards, readers and the other equipment? What replacement costs are you prepared to spend?

10. Is the cost of the equipment and supplies a concern, i.e., how much money can you spend on the identification system?

11. How many years do you want/need your contactless smart cards to last?
